I have no idea why so many people are upset about Sync. There are so many FOSS alternatives. Just… don’t use it? It literally doesn’t impact you at all.

Voyager is basically as feature rich as sync and only continues to get better. That said I love sync. And its like being in a warm blanket again. I also don’t mind supporting the developer with a one time payment to remove ads. The subscription doesn’t bother me because he offers a fair alternative imo.

I’m not upset in any way about Sync. It seems like a quality app with a different business model.

What I’m actually upset about is people claiming open source apps are shitty and only Sync is possible to provide a good experience. That’s just pure bs

This seems like a bit of a strawman argument. I haven’t seen anyone say that explicitly—if they have, it certainly isn’t common. I have seen people say they’re willing to pay for a “higher quality app,” and I can see how you could interpret the implication there being that FOSS apps are shitty in comparison. For me, though, I don’t interpret it the same way, and I’d assume positive intent. Some people like Sync better than the other apps and are willing to pay for it. That’s it, really.

I might prefer potatoes, but you might hate potatoes.

If we were looking at dishes in a restaurant, I might think one dish is a better value, because I like potatoes. You might think that that dish isn’t worth it if you hate potatoes. It doesn’t mean that the dish is better or worse, just that we have different preferences.

I don’t use sync myself, so I can’t speak on what specific aspects other people prefer over the FOSS apps. They might trust the developer more because they’ve interacted with them for a while, they might like how the UI works with their specific device, or they might even just like the logo. At the end of the day, it doesn’t effect me, as I can just keep using jerboa.

That’s a good analogy. The difference is that I’ve seen some comments saying that they really like potatoes because X sauce combo feel more polished for them (lol), and that’s cool, but I’ve seen several claiming that potatoes are the superior dish, potatoes have way more combinations, potatoes are way better at everything, nothing can compare to potatoes… Omg you can link settings from the app another reason why it’s the best app! (a custom html link that the app parses followed by an id code to redirect the app to that settings page, cool but kinda unnecessary to me).

And, it reaches a point where I just get pissed. 0 consideration, it’s just hostile. Mind you, I also read people saying that it’s the enemy of Foss yada yada, way less people and with tons of downvote at the bottom of the barrel, fuckem.

I’m just seeing quite the high victim complex from the sync users while belittling others, it feels a tiny bit like (and I’m so sorry for making this comparison) chistianity.

I’m just waiting for the wave to pass but it’s still everywhere.

I switched to Sync is because it seems to play nicer with my foldable phone than Voyager or Jerboa, but otherwise they’re all pretty much just as solid as each other imo

Artemis was supposed to be coming this week, no word yet.

You also have to use it from the artemis.camp instance, but that’s temporary until the kbin api is finished.

the protocol that allows instances to communicate is, but AFAIK there’s an API that apps use… the protocol is kinda just for how to push raw bulk data around, whilst the instance itself does things like filter based on “top”, “hot”, etc

also, in activitypub things like the actor (user), each comment, post, etc are individual objects which must be requested individually (or in a list via a search i think?), so any app that communicates via activitypub would need to make hundreds of requests to the instance to display a single post, comments, and user information!

It does. But I still use my mail app instead of going to gmail.com, I use my Spotify app instead of going to Spotify.com, I use the YouTube app, etc.

Sometimes a specialized app is just better. For me that’s definitely the case w sync.

Right there with you. I use —reddit— lemmy on my phone on the go. I want a button in a consistent place that opens it quickly.

I open my browser, oops I was looking at another tab I’ll just go through my tabs to find the specific website I’m looking for this time. At that point the browser is just its own app picker inside of another app picker. I have even added links to my Home Screen as well, but I’ve run into many issues with opening loads of dupes and clogging up my tabs. Maybe browser works in a perfect world (or even just a world where I save links in pocket or something instead of tabs idk) but it kind of just seems like an app browser with extra steps. Browser elitists do themselves no favors acting high and mighty about literally just not having an app? About saving 70MB like it’s 1999? Idk it’s a dumb argument. Everybody’s solution works for them.

I’m proving their point that sometimes a service is worth paying for (either through cash or by seeing ads)? In that case, yeah I guess I am. Different people have different preferences. Go figure.

The best way to lemmy is mlmym.org on LibreWolf. Works great on Linux phone and has the same old.reddit interface I’ve used for over a decade.

Why waste space on single-purpose apps when you have a browser. Also, websites can’t track you or waste resources when you aren’t actively using them like apps can.

Memmy is the best I have found. A lot of the issues recently have been related to instance problems like with lemmy.world. Stuff that Memmy isn’t at fault for.

That said, I am very excited to try the Voyager iOS App when it releases!

Liftoff has been super stable all the time I’ve used it, Infinity for Lemmy is surprisingly stable for something new, I’ve had no crashes at all. Both of them are updating very quickly and get better all the time.

Does liftoff do it from the comment section? I haven’t tried it. And if so does that interfere with your upvote/downvote swipes? (If it has that) I tried turning off the upvote/downvote swipes on thunder and it still wouldn’t let me swipe out of a post from the comments but now that I think about it, I wouldn’t want that unless it was only just one half of the screen so I could still upvote. I keep going back to Voyager because it feels like Apollo and I’m hoping they’ll emplement the swipe back at least from the post portion soon. I’ve got like 5-6 apps for Lemmy on my iPad. It’s pretty great we’re getting so much to choose from.

I’m like you, I also switch between many and Voyager sure is very Apollo like. And one of the apps that most consistently works.

Yeah, Liftoff allows for swipe anywhere also on comments. That’s how I personally want it, different behaviours depending on where you are is not very nice. You can still swipe left to upvote or save I believe, I am not sure if itself possible to change that yet.

The best thing would just be if one app managed to copy Apollo, it is the gold standard in usability.

I also think it’s very impressive with so many cool apps. Fantastic developers. But I kind of wish I had just one that was suiting.

also plugging infinity for lemmy, it’s really good, but incomplete as of the moment.
