I did the same. A relative of mine bought a decommisioned ThinkPad from their workplace and it came with a SIM card. The company contract on it expired after a while, so I wrote the number down and tossed it. Now I have a disposable number to sign up with for shitty software :)
I just realized this. When I got the laptop, the contract with the carrier still had one month left. That’s when I created my WhatsApp account, and I’ve never used the phone number since (guess I really don’t use any other shitty software). Thanks for bringing this to my attention because I would have definitely tried to use it and be very disappointed :)

You need the sim alive to recieve set up and confirmation sms. At least for whatsapp.
