  • “go to self checkout or wait forever.”

    On the unfortunate days I have to stop at the store when myself and everyone else are getting off of work, I’ve seen the lines at self checkout as long or longer than the registers.

    I’m use a self checkout if 1) there are empty checkouts and 2) I only have enough items that I can carry. Sure - then I’m getting in and out. But if I’m pushing a cart, I’m going to a cashier.



  • As a woman of an age dealing with unfortunate hormonal fluctuations, I’m holding myself to this. It’s almost frustrating in the way it’s paying off.

    I’ve been riding the cycle of shitty sleep leading to excess caffeine, leading to shittier sleep even taking melatonin, leading to even more poor diet choices. I suffered through a day where I denied myself afternoon caffeine (stopping at noon, where previously I thought 3pm was close enough) and had a sucky day. But I slept slightly better that night. Holding myself to this, each night’s sleep has been slightly better, and I feel like I’m making smarter decisions again.

    It’s still too early to say if it’ll be a long term solution, but this last week I’ve started taking small doses of l-theanine. It’s the stuff in tea that’s supposed to help you relax. I found 200mg chewable tablets that I break into 1/4-1/3 pieces. I take a little in the morning and some before bed, and am overall feeling more relaxed. I’ve slept beautifully the last few nights without melatonin, but with my track record I want to see that hold a good month before guiding the l-theanine all the credit.








  • Also when poop knocks at the door, ANSWER! Don’t keep putting it off if at all humanly possible. The longer poop sits in your colon, the drier it gets and the harder it will be to move later.

    And the bidet? With the right pressure it can help knock loose those last little nuggies that you weren’t able to get enough oomph behind to dislodge.





  • Something I haven’t seen other commenters bring up that can have a huge impact, is the overall lifestyles people are living.

    The unhealthiest years of my life were when I was working 2 jobs and struggling to keep a roof over mine and my 3 kids heads. Stress and depression were huge problems and money was tight, so sometimes the little bit of dopamine or serotonin from eating a “treat” were the highlights of the day. Add to that, the guilt of not being around to cook regular meals for my kids lead to 1) making large amounts of food on my one day off that could be eaten as leftovers throughout the week or 2) easy convenience foods (frozen pizzas, boxed Mac and cheese, etc) that the kids could make when I wasn’t around.

    Fast forward many years - my kids are adults taking care of themselves and I’m down to 1 good job that offers financial stability. My diet and health have completely changed. I actually have the time and energy to cook and plan better.

    I’m not saying this to shift blame or responsibility, but to bring a different experience. When I hear (hopefully well meaning) people suggest “just cook healthier meals” it strikes me about the same as “stop eating avocado toast and you could afford a house.”


  • I’ve played around with both tubes and dry “blocks”. For best of both worlds, you can get palettes that come in a box with removable sections that can be filled with whatever color paint. I filled these with paint from tubes, and by keeping the box closed it will mostly retain moisture of the paint while storing. If left long enough they will dry out, but being water colors, I just mist them with water and they work again.

    Also - you can get brushes that hold water! It’s basically a brush with a water chamber, and you squeeze it to put more water into the bristles. Makes it easy to travel, but for me it’s far less messy and keeps the colors cleaner.




  • One of the more common fixtures in American coffee drinking homes is a drip brewer. It pours hot water over a basket of grounds into a glass carafe which sits on a heating element to keep it warm.

    Personally, I dislike the taste and never drink that much coffee. I use a Clever Dripper to make my one large cup before work, drink it, and go. Depending on my mood or time available I might make an espresso based drink, but my Clever otherwise meets my daily needs.
