I feel like there’s a picture of etiquette where it’s always stuffy and exists only to reinforce unjust hierarchies. Etiquette as a gift given freely with hope but no expectation of return is a great alternate model.

One of the many things I loved about Taiwan was that people leave the left side of the escalator free for those who want to walk up or down.
There’s one single file line of people standing on the escalator. Even during the evening commute, there’s a single file line snaking back down into the station. But then as you get close there’s a much smaller line to the left moving much quicker of every who plans to walk up.
It’s so civilized.

Xi has not called for the “conquest” of Taiwan, has he? Using that word would be a massive escalation that would be all over the news. I’m pretty sure “reunified” is the word they use.

Taiwan’s indigenous population overwhelmingly support the KMT, for complex historical reasons. The KMT want closer ties with Beijing and are certainly favoured by Xi himself. I don’t think it’s fair to say that “Taiwan’s tribes” are an enemy of Xi.

I don’t see what incentive China has to buy this. Taiwan’s too important for them to give up just because of a rebrand. And I can’t see Taiwan’s current leaders giving away power to a community that’s less than 3% of the population - however just the cause may be. Also, that’s not even the correct name of the university. It’s National Taipei University of Education - I studied Mandarin there for a semester.

I always thought it was just like an email set to future send in say a week or 2, then every few days or every week you go in and bump forward the date.
I always heard a Dead Man’s Switch defined as a switch which goes off once you stop pressing it. So you just set up something to go off in the future, then for as long as you’re alive you keep preventing it from going off.

Personally I think it’s more about the NYT being a semi official mouthpiece of the US empire and its elites.
The NYT reflects the views of US elites most of whom support Israel because it’s a vital client state in a region of incredible security and economic importance to the global structure that empowers those elites.
