Nah, I don’t buy this story at all. Their car had Belarussian plates and that border is much closer and still open. I’d even argue that the UKR/RUS border is the worst place to cross with checkpoints, mines and drones everywhere. They would’ve been safer hiding out in a random village somewhere.

The Islamic State has plenty of reasons to hate Russia, such as their continued cooperation with the Assad government and Iran, the Chechen Wars, their military campaigns in Afghanistan… just to name a few. You don’t need to be “the worst foe” to be targeted by ISIS, as many of their attacks have shown.

Russia won’t dare to use nukes as long as the fighting happens within Ukrainian borders. Putin and the oligarchs aren’t willing to lose their kleptocracy over a piece of land they only tried to get because they felt it was a safe move. An actual NATO intervention would be a way out of the conflict for them without losing face.

That’s the most reasonable choice imo, you could probably earn a fair bit of money with those.
