Could probably be anon1, anon2, etc and it wouldn’t matter that much, since real identity is probably not a draw for them. Focus on regular people wanting the userbase to want to use fediverse rather than celebrities which is an off-putting first impression and point of sale for lot of people here.

I never found “all” browsable for any platform whether it be lemmy, YouTube, or reddit. It’s why subscribing has been so important to me, and filtering. Like on YouTube which I access through freetube I’ve disabled “trending” and “popular” since even the thumbnails were obnoxious for majority of the videos, and I blocked out channels to keep them from dominating search results. And on reddit what even made /r/all viewable was a reddit enhancement suite filter lists that was in the hundreds for blocking of communities, and even then was a wack a mole that required keyword filtering.

All of any platform will devolve into a shit show. As for niche subs. Yeah, not much that can be done about that if the user base is small.

Yeah, there’s no proper screening process and companies aren’t help liable for malicious advertisements. It’s the Wild west out there, and companies take money from anyone due to there being no consequences. Internet advertising has no proper screening process like network television.

I’m surprised that government devices aren’t heavily locked down so users only have the bare minimum apps and lock installs. Even weirder that government officials would be allowed to use the device for personal use. That’s how I’d think work devices would be handled to try to reduce attack vectors.

You probably had different interest, travel, and product usage patterns now than you did ten years ago. I don’t see why behavioral patterns wouldn’t continue to change going forward, so as old data becomes obsolete taking care of present and future data is still worth doing to some extent even if past data might be freely available.

What place isn’t. If you want unbiased aggregate of news the only option is a rss. There isn’t a place for an unbiased social media for news if it is user submitted and driven by voting or algorithm based.

I recommend Connect for lemmy if you have Android. Can put in filters to block communities that contain any keywords and posts that contain key words. And block entire instances.

When it comes to social media filtering is important to curate out the filler you don’t want.

I went with lemmy.one because it is run by /r/privacyguides and is federated with lemmy.world and beehaw with it being the two instances I wanted to be able to participate in.

Politics seem more exhausting than on reddit, since there’s entire instances that exist soley for the purpose of spreading their beliefs. Which is a pro for them with instances helping to foster a stronger community, but then they seem so much more present every where too. /c/all can be flooded with the topics they want to push if there’s a mass submission. And new instances pop up if defederated with the main goal seeming to be not just a community for themselves, but evangelizing. And lemmy isn’t at a stage yet where subscribed feeds can provide enough content to avoid /c/all like back on reddit.

Connect for lemmy with keyword filtering and instance blocking has really helped though to reduce the frequency of manual community blocking. Didn’t block during the first few weeks though, which was a nice period before it became necessary to curate personal feeds.

Absence of disable inbox setting for comments or threads like on Reddit is also a contributor I think, since if you are the type to have to defend your comment then it leads to a back and forth that can go longer than on reddit since you will be made aware of the reply with no ability to turn it off for either party.

I think the honey moon period is over for all instances and communities when people were motivated to comment with the goal of trying to encourage user growth by being nicer than they usually are.

Now that people are settling in they are more comfortable using the fediverse like they’ve done on social media. Which does change the type of posts and comments that now come out.

So arguments are expected for even trivial topics like games. It’s good or bad thing depending on the viewpoint, but was expected outcome since motivations for posting was much different in the earlier days.

Yeah, I love this feature being very common in Foss apps. It was one of the driving factors in moving over to Foss apps after I stopped rooting, since I was no longer able to reliably backup appdata anymore through titanium backup and swift backup.

Syncthing comes in nicely for syncing up those backups across different devices too.
