The historical bit is just looking at things in a longer term context. It’s a challenge for people, particularly at a younger age, to consider things in a view that goes beyond a single lifetime. In the past roughly 100 years we have gone from ‘man will never fly’ to being able to have this conversation on servers across the globe. Women getting a vote. Schools and entire societies being segregated by race. From as recent as my youth when being gay was a punchline to the LGBT community largely being not only accepted but actively supported.

There are losses here and again of course, but in a grand scheme view society has made notable progress. Maybe just a bit of frustration over the recent weeks with the ‘nothing ever changes’ mantra that seems so popular.

Cheney, for as much of a tool as he may be, at least hasn’t shown himself to be fully engulfed in the maga cult and recognizes that allowing Trump into power is a legitimate threat to the entire system. It’s less of an endorsement of Harris and more a rejection of Trump.

Edit: To touch on the ‘eventually’ aspect. I don’t want it to sound like an excusing of the slow pace of change in our modern world, but put into context that the USA is, by global comparison, a young nation. Look at the time spans that nations in Asia or Europe have existed by comparison and the length of time it took to change their ways, often through drastic social upheaval. In comparison the gains in social equalities here have come at a rapid pace in the past century. For a place founded in violence and oppression where it was originally codified law that only white landowning males where of consequences we’ve made some notable improvements in the span of a few generations. As it stands today we’re in a space where there are people legitimately clamoring for a second civil war due to the inability to find consensus on any number of issues. So many things that are common sense to the rest of the world are considered alien here, deemed ‘un-american’. As we move along the road people come around to these ‘radical’ ideals, but it often takes a generation for them to become the norm.

Let’s see this madness ended today. My daughter’s will not be handmaidens, my young son will not grow up learning hate. As a child I was told our generation will fix the problems of the past and that assignment is long past it’s due date.

An interesting idea, but I doubt the TV folks go for it. You would have events taking much longer and need more cameras or crazy distant shots to show the presumed gap they would have. Just be a pain to show.

Unless it’s something like a ‘unpopular opinion’ community it’s better not to go into places, particularly ones like behaw who tend to be extra cautious about negative commentary, and say X sucks. All that does is beg for a fight and is bound to irritate someone if it becomes a habit.

And with a major portion of US military aid grants coming with the condition that the purchased equipment come from US contractors you can argue which funding bucket it came from, but in all practicality Israel bought US systems with aid money granted from the US and then where willing to give the old systems they intended to decommission to someone the US is aiming to support.

It really is just US aid to Ukraine with an Israeli sticker on it in that sense.

They’re a part of the mix. Firewalls, Proxies, WAF (often built into a proxy), IPS, AV, and whatever intelligence systems one may like work together to do their tasks. Visibility of traffic is important as well as the management burden being low enough. I used to have to manually log into several boxes on a regular basis to update software, certs, and configs, now a majority of that is automated and I just get an email to schedule a restart if needed.

A reverse proxy can be a lot more than just host based routing though. Take something like a Bluecoat or F5 and look at the options on it. Now you might say it’s not a proxy then because it does X/Y/Z but at the heart of things creating that bridged intercept for the traffic is still the core functionality.

It depends on what your level of confidence and paranoia is. Things on the Internet get scanned constantly, I actually get routine reports from one of them that I noticed in the logs and hit them up via an associated website. Just take it as an expected that someone out there is going to try and see if admin/password gets into some login screen if it’s facing the web.

For the most part, so long as you keep things updated and use reputable and maintained software for your system the larger risk is going to come from someone clicking a link in the wrong email than from someone haxxoring in from the public internet.

I have a dozen services running on a myriad of ports. My reverse proxy setup allows me to map hostnames to those services and expose only 80/443 to the web, plus the fact that an entity needs to know a hostname now instead of just an exposed port. IPS signatures can help identify abstract hostname scans and the proxy can be configured to permit only designated sources. Reverse proxies also commonly get used to allow for SSL offloading to permit clear text observation of traffic between the proxy and the backing host. Plenty of other use cases for them out there too, don’t think of it as some one trick off/on access gateway tool

Self hosted in this context is pretty well aimed at the ‘I do a service on my own time and usually own gear’ crowd. IT for a company is an entirely separate thing. Professional self-hosting would be more on a community like ‘serveradmin’.

If you don’t have concerns about it being private I’ve used one of these for similar purposes in the past. Just a little portable DLNA server. The original project stopped but there are forks or the last version of the original out there.
