I wish the FCC would lighten up the amateur radio rules tho. Cool stuff like Meshtastic is happening outside of licenced bands and is taking off

Yeah I did! I’m hoping my library get the book. Hell I might buy it, read it and donate it after
If a nuclear missile is launched at the United States the President has just 6 minutes to come to terms with that and decide to launch a counter attack or not.
If that counter attack is headed to North Korea, any land based missiles will head over the arctic circle, over Russian airspace where similar shoot/no shoot decisions will have to be made in a similar timeframe.
OpenStreetMap and their editors are great and I use them a lot, but if you really want to have great flexibility with your map design QGIS is Open Source
Here’s a video on how to use it
You can use CalTopo’s print pdf to print that OSM data too
I see it as every employee walmart has to hire and pay to solve this problem is a local and the money will be saved and spent locally, not automatically going to be another drop in some CEO’s bucket.
The best choice is to shop local in the first place but some places don’t have that luxury. And who knows if enough local money builds up people might open their own businesses
People think that govt developed = bad. It’s a consideration for sure but if anything govt developed is so hopelessly and inherently compromised then many of the measures discussed here are useless for privacy already because they almost all run through internet, a govt created system. Even TOR. But yet here we are anyway because they are still useful systems.
Governments pour tons of time money and effort into secure communication, and not for profit, and we can still take advantage of that advancement with some caution.
Wait until they find out who started the internet. Or who runs GPS satellites
When it was sms compatible it was a suuuuper easy sell for my family
“It’s way more secure when you text me but you can still text everyone else you know too. And we can still use it through wifi if cell service isn’t working for me.”
It would potentially fall under “fruit of the poisonous tree doctrine” that would make it inadmissable for actual court cases but otherwise there’s nothing to stop people from gathering information that is available to the public
We can always do the “nothing beyond my immediate observation can be trusted” method like the flat earthers do
It might not be much but it’s still legal precedent that will hopefully help it reach critical mass. Like getting Al Capone on tax evasion
I forget what privacy podcast I was listening to but they said that privacy is important because you might not be under scrutiny now but could be.
After the Boston marathon bombing reddit was scouring footage and believed a particular person was responsible (“we did it reddit!”). They were wrong. People found his address, work etc and he was stalked and harrassed for days though he did nothing wrong.
You can bet he would have liked to disappear for a while, and a little extra everyday privacy in advance would have made that a lot easier.
I’ve never been tased but I strongly suspect it would be taser, tear gas, pepper spray from best to worst. The effects of pepper spray is intense and long lasting, even when you shower after pepper spray will leave your pores and hit your face again, and maybe even run down to your junk if you aren’t careful
This community is called YouShouldKnow not YouShouldDoSomethingAboutThis
You have the info and you can care as much or as little as you like
With gps it’s easy to let navigation skills slip but it’s so important. I try to teach my relatives when opportunities come up.
I always try to look at a map before I go somewhere unfamiliar. Digital, paper doesn’t matter and you don’t really have to memorize anything in particular. Just know what way is north and the general lay of the land to build “shelves in your brain” as someone put it. Then when you see a landmark you’ve either seen it before on the map or know what “shelf” to put it on if that makes sense
“Leadership is simple. Take care of your people and make a decision.”
This is from a USAF Major who was once one of the first dudes in Afghanistan after 9/11, working with green berets when he was enlisted. He said that it’s amazing how easy it can be to lose sight of those two basic things.
Scenario based creative problem solving involving abstract ideas and imaginative visualization?
I agree the convenience is a huge game changer. I can vibe with a good audiobook while driving but I mostly just go with a podcast
Or we could actually make some stuff in the US/EU for a change. I know it takes time but it’s probably for the best in the long run
