I have a loved one with permanent nerve damage from chemo. We’re very happy the chemo was successful, but imagine a combo of numbness and constant pain for the rest of your life in all your fingers, which becomes dramatically more severe with exposure to cold. It makes make simple daily life tasks from driving, to cooking, etc. far more difficult. They do not tell patients in advance they are going to continue the treatments until the point where permanent damage happens. You only realize after going through it that this was the plan all along. It makes medical talk about informed consent feel ridiculous. The severity fluctuates, but it has already been like 7 years, and this is never going away. It is not for “a while”.
Some jerk company (like Google) cannot suddenly discontinue my entire reader with all my feeds, because its mine, on my server. But because it’s a web app, I can use it from any device, unlike a local app. After Google killed reader, That was just too annoying. Self hosted since.

We should ALSO teach open source alternatives, and teach the idea that there are functional alternatives, but a student who has never used the major apps isn’t getting their resume even looked at by a human.
I’ve never bothered to check, because I self host to serve 1-5 users, and I’ve never generated enough traffic for any ISP to notice. I would need to pay them more for a static IP address, but we have dynamic DNS services for that. My ISP doesn’t put any actual obstacles in place beyond dynamic IP.

I run BicBucStrim on my NAS, and I access it through the web browser of any PC or tablet, my Kobo eReader, or Mobiscribe eReader. You can download a book to the device to read it, though. It basically just generates a nice web layout to access your Calibre library.

Depending what you want, you can do this very simply:. Create an SMB network share on the PC. It can be password protected or not. Doesn’t matter what OS, really (Windows, OSX, Linux). Then, on your Android phone, use an app like Solid Explorer or any other network capable file manager app that you like. Add the share to your file explorer app. After that, you can copy files just like the network share is a USB flash drive or SD card, or any other drive. It is taking advantage of stuff already built into your PC OS.

No, some people have a complete third set. Some people only have a partial third set, or even have third teeth in just a few positions within the mouth. A dentist who told me about this said it’s a little rare, but not super rare.
It saves me $10 per month, and that $120 per year is more than worth it. Plus, my home network is none of their business, and using your own equipment is your only means of privacy and control within your own network. I understand that not everyone cares, but consumers should be educated.
