I don’t trust that they won’t make a strong push to lock you into the Amazon ecosystem.

And, bluntly, I don’t trust Bezos, especially after all of this election bullshit he pulled with WaPo where he personally got involved. The chances are now non-zero that Kindle could censor books. If a tyrannical regime told Bezos to remove a list of books from Kindle devices I think he’d roll over and do it. And that’s not right. They’re the customer’s books - they bought them and they get to decide what they read without censorship. And to be clear, I don’t care which way the censorship goes. We shouldn’t be censoring books - full stop.

I used to be such a kindle Stan but I don’t think they will let me have full control over an expensive device that I buy and books that I buy on their platform.

I de-drm every book I buy and side load it onto my devices because no company in the future should be able to tell me what books I can read. I’m currently using a Kobo but if they start fucking around too (no signs of this yet…) I’ll find a device that will respect my freedom.

If you want to sideload your own books and continue to be able to do so, steer clear of any Amazon device.

Basically, it is becoming more common in English writing to use the masculine “hero” as gender neutral when the figure is a famous and/or historical figure.

If it is a fictional character, “heroine” is still widely used.

There’s been a wider trend of using gender neutral terms in the language. “They” as a replacement for “he” or “she”, for example, used to be improper but is now quite widely accepted and not only when speaking about a non-binary person.

I’m using a hyperbolic comparison to point out that Israel’s justification for killing Palestinian civilians is wrong. October 7th doesn’t give the IDF carte blanche to genocide a whole civilian population.

I’m pointing out that Israel often claims that Palestinian civilians are connected to / harbouring / being used as shields for Hamas so it’s basically fair game to kill them (they are enemy combatants).

Given that stance, shouldn’t the opposite also be true because Israel has compulsory military service. Because of this, all of their civilians are technically connected to the IDF so are they not also enemy combatants?

Israel’s population does compulsory military service, does that make them all IDF and fair game as a military target? Of course not. So why is “Hamas = Everywhere” a valid excuse when “IDF = Everywhere” isn’t.

I really don’t think Netanyahu and his genocide cabinet would stop even if they stopped receiving weapons and/or funding. You could prosecute under the ICC but he’s not going to attend any sort of trial. Sanctions will likely never happen.

Here’s the thing too - there was an interview on the news in my country with an Israeli legal expert on sexual assault. She was pleased with the UN report investigating Hamas’ sexual assaults.

When asked if there would be a similar UN investigation for Palestinians, she said she didn’t see why the UN needed to because Palestine has its own agencies on the ground who can investigate.
