Not sure what you’re fighting me about - I can tell you for a fact that we had local cronies ( in Cluj or Constanta for example ) get away scot-free after taking people’s advance payments on new apartment complexes, never building anything and just delaying proceedings until the trial closed. Or politicians’ sons that got away with vehicular manslaughter and DUIs simply because of influence. Now I don’t know how much influence the tates have, but at the very least they could’ve hired competent local attorneys that know how to game the system. And the justice system here is laughably corrupt.

They learned from our local high-profile crooks that if you can delay proceeding for a couple years, the process ends. Or if you know people that know people you might get lucky and a judge retires, in which case the whole thing starts from scratch. Meantime they can continue to build their public image and pick fights with kermit or whoever on twitter. have very little hope that they will be prosecuted “to the full extent of the law”.

Still, I get why vucic is playing at both ends, Serbia is a hard country to run, and so far they’ve been ok-ish despite not having advantages like being in the EU, Schengen or the EEA.

That doesn’t feel like much. In Romania the ruling coalition has been spending upwards of 40mil euro for “press and propaganda” every year since 2021. And this is in a country with an eighth of the population and 1/50 of the land surface.

There’s admittedly some potential in there, like teaching them to analyse statistics and ‘teaching critical thinking’ whatever that implies.

Conspiracy theory belief however is emotional rather than rational. You cannot ‘teach’ people to not do it. I worry that they will condition kids to dismiss any news that deviates from official propaganda by just labelling them as conspiracies. And frankly with the UK being the police state that it is, that might just be the end goal.

To my knowledge, they already declared the nazi salute illegal in germany ( for good reason too ). Maybe they should ban this one too. And then maybrle the next evil symbol some other terrorist org might come up with. Slippery slope, no? Besides, the problem with creating a diplomatic incident out of some racist footballer’s gesture is that you’re legitimizing the terrorists, you’re telling them “yes your organization is relevant enough for us to notice and create a ruckus about it”.

This whole lemmy tankie dev thing has been discussed ad nauseam here for the past year or so. Not sure what solutions you suggest, but if I were to filter my software by who’s an asshole dev and who’s not, that list will end up really short.

As far as the ml instance goes, I don’t agree that we should start defederating left and right with any and all undesirables, but to each their own. At least people now will be in the know, and it might take some weight off lemmy.world

This is potentially the worst possible outcome for this whole debacle. This way the austrian conservatives earn points because they managed to restrict the percieved illegal immigrant flow from the east. Also the current governing parties in romania get to keep their crooked border staff, through which they siphon hundreds of millions of euro, as well as earning some electoral points. This partial agreement will also make sure that further schengen talks can be put on the back burner. And in the end the true beneficiaries of a schengen accord - romanian/bulgarian businesses that ship by truck - will get the shaft. Oh, and this whole scandal plays right into russia’s hands, as this will fuel serious anti-eu sentiment in romania.

As usual CNN is making out of this a bigger deal than it actually is. These are slovak parliamentaries, so it’s not FPTP, therefore he didn’t “win” ( yet, anyway ). This seems to be just the social-democratic party’s growth from 19% in the last election to 23%, which would be in trend with growing conservative sentiment in europe. Besides, PS also grew from 8% to 18%, but that doesn’t generate as many clicks as “SLOVAKIA IS NOW PRO-RUSSIA!” so it’s barely a sidenote. Key takeaways are that they will have to seek coalition if they really want to pose a challenge to NATO policies.
