as someone who runs GrapheneOS and looked into the possibility of doing contactless payments: no. it simply does not work. all the contactless payment apps can somehow detect you’re not running the stock OS for the phone and choose to lock themselves down.

happens more than you might think. 4chan is a weird unique place. it’s mostly unmoderated, which makes it the default locale for a lot of unsavory people tossed out of all the nice clubs. but it’s not ONLY the unsavory people (the worst of which tend to keep to themselves anyway)

mostly, the result of the low level of moderation and lack of personal control over what you see (no “feeds” or anything, it’s just a plain forum) is that you see a lot of people “raw”.

they have no account attached to their posts, certainly no real identity. can this make shitty people feel emboldened to say shitty things? yes. can it lead to surprisingly meaningful moments of actual vulnerability between people who have no reason to hide? yes that too.

most of the non-extremist users of the site are, I think, people who prefer and engage with the latter, while just scrolling past the cringe edgy teenagers and dollar tree nazis thinking they have a secret club.

it is hard to find this kind of honesty and depth on other social media sites. reddit was a bit closer than the rest for a while when they had a very liberal registration policy (email didn’t even need to be verified so throwaway accounts were common and accessible) but I think they’ve cracked down on that a bit in the name of ad profile profitability. even having an account that can “be found” by people you know or future friends you meet on the site can keep you from being willing to be totally open. on low-moderation anonymous forums like 4chan, there’s no reason to worry about your “persona” or reputation. in fact, users who seek either tend to be universally ridiculed for it and told to return to other vapid sites.

it also has a reputation for its users being, um, generally some kind of neurodivergent. I think this is because of the very low quantity of social rules that have any consequence. social rules are exhausting, easier to just stay quiet past a certain point.

i wouldn’t know, according to them and their folks, my friends and family and I are not people, so I guess my definition of that must differ. moreover, I don’t dispense sympathy for people who would cheer and support the news that me and mine have been hunted down and shot in the street. I don’t sympathize with the aggressors. for real! I’ll use Google maps on my phone only if I’m going to a new place I haven’t been to before and I don’t have time to take a few moments to learn the route(s) ahead of time. that’s its convenience. but I hate being on that digital leash, being scolded by my phone if I take a different road to see where it leads or to stop for gas or a break. so, I tend to drive everywhere in my day-to-day without it, and my friends think it’s so weird.

one of my friends won’t start driving to the grocery store a few blocks away from his house without turning on his Garmin. he’s all “if I take a wrong turn I don’t want to have to pull over to look at the map!” like he can’t just turn around and get back onto the simple route he usually takes? same friend is among 3 of my friends who get visibly anxious when I drive them places without GPS and will pull up their phone in the passenger seat to “get directions for me”. had to tell all 3: “don’t give me directions unless I ask for them. I know where I am and where I’m going, I don’t need you telling me to make a turn 60s before each one.”

This is exactly it. I have seen folks saying we are entering a new kind of economy: a kind of “whale economy”. After seeing it work for mobile apps and games, other normal companies are wising up to the fact that your revenue will be the same if you charge 10 times what you were and lose 9/10 of your customers as a result… but your expenses will be lower. less labor, less equipment, less materials, less time. The 1/10 who stay and pay the high prices out themselves as “whales”, the people who probably have enough money to never care and will probably just keep spending even if the prices keep going up and up and up.

The majority of us are about to become low value customers… and therefore, not have easy access to common goods and services any longer. This will make perfect short term sense to each company doing this, but will promptly collapse what’s left of our economy into ruin.

School recruiters are basically practicing pedophiles. They disgust me. They:

• hunt for vulnerable children, who might be more prone to complying due to trauma or disability or even just recent social happenings or baseline teenage angst
• try to talk to them one on one so adults won’t interfere
• entice them with treats or games or other such things
• try to convince the kids to agree to do something they don’t yet understand

The SOP of a school recruiter and that of a practicing pedophile are so similar that I wonder how many of the latter are created after someone has been the prior simply due to how the job demands you to operate and consider the kids as just resources… or how often the prior becomes a career path for the latter simply to justifiably increase their access to children.

Back in the late 2000s, I got pulled in to the office in high school because I told the recruiter visiting the school that he was a massive piece of shit and needed to stay away from me and my friends if he knew what was good for him. I said this after he sat down near me and, idk, tried to bond? By calling my female friend that left “a real hottie” and tried poorly to insinuate I could probably seal the deal if I was a hot army boy. Baseline revolting statement from an adult to a child for one, I’m gay for two, she was lesbian for three… so I said what I said and apparently my words were sufficiently hurtful that he ran to the admin to cry about it and I got told off because that kind of language and sentiment is unacceptable towards someone “just doing their job” at the school. They found no issue at the time with his ingratiation technique, though I never saw him again.
