Dutch has the same word: angst. In my experience it’s not as “heavy” as Angst in German, but rather interchangeable with “schrik hebben” or “bang zijn”. Though “angstig zijn” might be more of longer duration, like a character trait of a person.
Exactly what I’m looking for! I’ld like back sleeping but with a slightly tilted, side supported head. Lean head all the way = neck pain. Head straight = can’t fall asleep. I’ve tried stuff with backsleeping+ side support for leaning the head, but the extra pillow on the head side isn’t strong enough (doesn’t last) and it all gets too hot around the head.
but they might be worth a lot in 30 years if you take good care of them!
30 mins of a German professor who all his life studied doing dishes and how dishwashers work. (in juicy German accent English).
The answer is soaking.
I think the Chinese population is very much “under control” already with their state-capitalist system.
It is. I use it as such regularly. Keyboard+mouse+screen = browsing firefox as usual. Works quite well. Libreoffice, okular, signal desktop… I’ve used worse computers in recent years, steamdeck desktop experience is better than many 4 to 5 year old cheap laptops with win10 or win11.
If you properly use firefox personalised the way you want it, it gives you shitty unusable websites in Europe too. Banking says no, newspapers being buggy to unreadable with certain script blocking or cookie refusal, disable adblock to continue windows etc, it all exists here too. I always try ff. If really needed I open the shitty site in edge and afterwards return to ff… Also public (tax payer funded!) flemish radio and tv for example is completely unusable in ff with proper settings, works “perfect” in edge or chrome. German and Dutch public TV and radio works fine in ff tho.
Exactly this. Any random billionaire has the same Good vs bad argument against them, but without transparency and without accountability… It shouldn’t be 1 white rich guy’s decision how to spend billions of wealth, how society’s wealth is spent should be the result of democratic process, because creating the wealth is an effort in which (nearly) everyone participates too!
turkey has a strategic position towards the bosporus and russia, why they get away with a lot of bullshit too, israel is a more important as a reliable foot on the ground for guaranteeing the north end of the suez canal and the eastern end of the mediterranean. Cyprus also plays that role, but is also contested area greece/turkey. Never put all your eggs in one basket, that kind of thing. Carriers are nice but a always a risk (they might not seem so now, but you never know). Israel also offers an extra access point north side of the red sea, would the suez be unaccessible.
I’m not at all saying the usa should just blindly follow israel on its warpath as it has been for many decades. They should try to get netanyahu towards the exit, sooner the better, but just leaving israel altogether is probably not in the best interest for the usa itself, long term geostrategically.
You can’t be on top of the global trade and neglect strategic points that protect strategic trade routes. I mean, you can, but it will make USA shrink in global importance even faster. You leave, others fill the void, pay the price, reap the benefits. Isolationism isn’t likely to save the USA world dominance. Dominance which is the very biggest reason your currency is the most stable in the world: it’s backed by the biggest military apparatus ever, stop caring about the world, find out soon when your prices skyrocket and economy crashes. The real question is how the USA should behave in this, not if they should do a thing but rather what they should do.
yeah maybe i’m dumb, but for example in the put a few cities widget they offer, I don’t seem to have the option to show for example air pollution instead of temperature. Bummer.
So it’s trump or Biden calling shots not scholz, big difference. And in most countries with US nukes: there is an American units base maintaining and safeguarding the weapons, it’s a big difference from France or UK and that reflects in politics.
On the other hand France is kinda safe when it comes to a conventional war, at least for a long time. Of course Germany is scared because it is not that far away, it is literally just Poland between Germany and russia and the German military is by far not able to fight a war against a well trained army with endless human resources.
France has nukes, Germany doesn’t. Meaning france can say whatever they want, the nuke-threat is empty against other nuke countries.
If they really wanna play putin’s stupid game, NATO should amass 200.000 troops not in or next to Ukraine, but elsewhere. 50.000 more near scandinavian border, 50.000 more baltics & poland, 50.000 turkey-georgia, 25.000 moldova/romania and, because why not, 25.000 somewhere near bering strait/alaska. All-in, tanks, plane, carriers, stand by on every other accessible border to russia. See how russia really handles that permanent land overstretch in every direction.
it was in real life and the person calling me out was a hardcore feminist. So yeah, the construction is being used to call out non-native speakers on their so-called ideological bias against feminists, or so it felt :s It weirded me out and continues to do so. To me it feels more inclusive to call everyone, male, female or non-binary, by one and the same word, instead of focussing on ones reproductive organs while talking about their profession or hobby or whatever.
“actrice” is one the few in dutch where it does still seem to matter to use the female version! Calling a female actress the male “acteur” would weird out a room i think. But if it’s a group of both male and female people, and you use the general “acteurs” it would be fine i think and “actrices en acteurs” would be fine too. While in german, only the “schauspielerinnen und schauspieler” of “schauspieler*innen” would be okay and just saying “schauspieler” to a mixed group would be very frowned upon.
I get the idea, i hate the implementation. I think it would be easier for everyone to just cancel one word and call everyone the same, instead of doubling down on everything, it’s doable in writing, but it’s a real hassle in talking.
It is real. People have gotten mad at me for saying the 1 general (in my opinion in that case not-gendered) word instead of the slight pause and adding *innen. It’s quite difficult for non-native speakers to get used to it.
Meanwhile, in Dutch language, many female doctors, bosses, directors etc all prefer to be spoken to with the general “male” word, because they prefer to be spoken to on an equal term as their male colleagues and for the difference not to be made. Witnessing Germanic languages growing apart a tad further I guess.
Many leading shittifiers don’t match your explanation. Google, the owner of YouTube, is not a small start-up VC toy.
Thanks! Do you think I’ld be good with this for example:

I9 13900h. On paper it beats the bit more expensive ryzen 9 6900hx version by about 10 % in single thread.
