It seems to me like lemmy.world has more activity. One of my threads even has 6/7 upvotes and both commenters from it (on ps1graphics, which is a kbin community). Oddly on the blender community (also kbin?) my thread got 4 upvotes from different instances but no comments EDIT: And I just checked, it seems to have not federated to lemmy.world (23 hours ago, probably before the temporary activity block?) and the one upvoted by LW seems to not have gone to the other instances

I was having similar thoughts about Nim and portability when I saw this Github project (it uses APE but it’s more like a runtime for software? though I’m not sure if actual usage is easy like other frameworks/libraries etc). Though honestly I will probably sooner do something with Godot or Raylib via bindings instead, which is unfortunate because the 2D polygonal style is not well supported* unless you keep it really simple.

I’m thinking about tinkering with low-poly 3D+mostly untextured models (vertex colors, see vertex color skyboxes as an inspiration for the style/concept) to sidestep the 2D issue (as it’s well-established in 3D). My mousewheel is currently broken, though. And I’m not totally happy about the idea of using Blender, though any 3D editor opens up more options (in-engine stuff is cool, but probably locked-in).

It’s also difficult finding discussion about Nim on the fediverse, particularly when people don’t explicitly say nim-lang. That and often Kbin doesn’t properly federate Mastodon replies so potential conversations are just broken. And I haven’t seen other languages that come close to the same feel, some scripting languages might be OK if their performance wasn’t a problem (and often there are options to help, but it also makes me question if it also wrecks their compatibility with bindings when it’s a different thing).

* = 1. Godot 4 has a still-in-PR-stage feature that can be used for art but may not perform well enough to be used for an entire project with MSAA, also still no Nim bindings. Also even then, the editors could be better (vertex colors and internal vertices).
2. I am not aware of polygonal tools for Raylib at all, started making a text format and loader but got bogged down on details. And it would be even more basic than Godot’s polygons, no animation aside from just making multiple frames and swapping (or maybe some basic transform effects, but this would all need to be done manually while Godot has in-engine animation).

I was gonna say that hell is the US healthcare system and needing multiple appointments especially when it involves a long drive and trial-and-error. But apparently hell is still other people (on top of the other stuff).

Either way, good luck. Too bad we aren’t to the point where it’d be possible to walk down the street and get some cheap automated help, even if it’s just some type of scan that’d streamline things (not that I really trust magic-box AI).

KiB, MiB, GiB etc are more clear. It makes a big difference especially 1TB vs 1TiB.

I would say that to some degree the terminally lonely are not the ones expressing distaste for annoyance (that is likely people who live together and don’t have much separation/boundaries).

My current laptop supply sounds about like R2D2 when my GPU is running full tilt and I’m maxed out on 18 of 20 cores with AI.

But that’s the thing it happens at idle, and I’ve tried fixing it by unplugging+discharging and letting it sit unpowered in my colder-than-average room for 5 hours or so and it was still happening when I booted back up. So time or some other random thing seems to be a bigger difference.

When I had it not happen for days, doing anything that made the fans ramp up didn’t cause it to happen (even full tilt as you said). In fact most of the time it’d start with nothing open other than the browser.

I thought it might’ve been dust (despite my PSU being the least dusty component) but after dusting it doesn’t seem to have been the issue.

Even past 30 and with (mild) tinnitus, yeah my hearing is still great so I’m going to hear it. Light bulbs, chargers, the router etc.

Recently my computer’s PSU has started randomly buzzing a not-quite-high frequency. It could be age (it’s from 2019) though I’m pretty sure it’s some kind of interference because sometimes it won’t make any noise at all for days and I’m pretty sure my light bulb (an LED filament bulb which doesn’t have much in the way of components) seems to also make different pitches of buzzing that coordinates with how much my computer PSU will buzz.

Anyways it bothers me, so as soon as I post this I’m going to power-down and unplug my computer and switch to a different device for the next day or so.

I know. They added some at one point and I installed an anti-CSD package, I’m also pretty sure they pulled back some of their plans because of backlash too.

If they go full CSD I would probably need to find something else and probably just concede+just use the slimmest window theme there is rather than something frameless even (from what I’ve seen, other window theme systems are not as modular as xfwm which allows simply deleting the sides/bottom files etc).

Someone could probably make this concept (frameless, minimal title bar, no title on maximized, no raise-on-focus, rolled-up windows, floating window buttons that are only on focused windows) into a simple window manager, probably not me any time soon though. And I’m not sure how easy that is on Wayland (I know options exist to make it easer–such as wlroots I think–though I don’t know how it’d compare to making something for X).

For me, xfwm is the defining feature. I have my own custom super-minimal window theme (old screenshot showing mpv looking like PiP, I made a newer version with the idea of rolling up windows such as when playing music). Also the tweaks for hiding the titlebar when maximized.

Though I’m also on nvidia (1050Ti) so I don’t really even think about Wayland.

Whittling seemed like something I could do indoors more easily without too much mess. We have a furnace and a giant woodpile so you’d think it’d be perfect, problem is when I try to carve something it’s too seasoned* to do much more than carve the bark off. Probably doesn’t help that I’m using a gas station knife, but it’s probably the wood itself being most of the issue.

I usually had luck with the rotary tool (probably because I usually don’t need to get rid of too much material), but once I tried to use the angle grinder with a cheap toothy power-carving disk on a small-ish log and I could barely put a small bevel on it.

I almost went to see a doctor in early 2020 (cue but then the funniest thing happened). Lots of issues/complexity there too esp. carless in a lower density USA, guess I’ll wait until there are autodocs or doctor worms or something that doesn’t need forms/questions/multiple visits/uncertainty etc.

Last year I got the cheapest+lightest ebike with gears that I could find. I went 131 miles on the trail (that’s with 250w assist, usually PAS 1 or 2) until the trail shut down a few months after I got it (as mentioned elsewhere). I had noticed some effect even by mile 100 (easier riding mostly, anything else is too nebulous to judge), but being so long without activity and I probably lost all benefit and then some.

My thinking is that there’s also physical health issues and other issues that make physical activity less viable. Human travel (walking/biking) would be a big help*, or just more time/space/money/comfort/motivation(s)** (alternatively: if healthy options were more of a norm/incentive rather than a lucrative market to chase) which is even less likely than changes to zoning/density and infrastructure.

In any case sure, improving someone’s life in 1 aspect will provide benefits… but is anyone actually going to help with that or is it going to just result in more of the same platitudes that are already heard? I don’t think any study has much chance to create policy in the USA any decade soon.

*=That’s from experience… I’m in a semi-rural area, started biking right before the trail closed for renovation ~6months ago. Still closed, no ETA other than “early 2024”.

**=Aside from health/personal/travel reasons, maybe it’s for a hobby. Getting something out of the activity (money, electric, usable mechanical energy) would be nice if it weren’t a problem of cost/storage/loss/logistics etc.

EDIT: And I should say Bowling Alone is in force here too, but again money is probably a big part of that too.

It’s something like that, but way beyond me so I couldn’t get something manually let-alone full bindings. I was making a polygon loader+text format for Raylib and didn’t even finish that somewhat due to it not being straightforward to properly implement/use (beyond what I had already that is, and that I’d probably need to make an editor too). And a big reason for wanting Godot is to create and animate polygons in-engine eye example with an editor so yeah I’d rather wait.

The truth about programming is that the language isn’t really that important

I have had the thought that many languages have bindings for Raylib, so that lowers the bar a lot.

Beyond that, I can see a lot of problems. I already could use Raylib and a few other types of frameworks/libraries (UI, webui, TUI, fantasy console, scripting, microcontroller stuff) potentially, so any other language has to allow more/better options than that. Particularly as I don’t really have ideas for those (with few-or-no tools) right now to start there.

Alternatively, it’s a dirty language, but PHP is supremely usable.
