But really, I think there is a lot of room for improvement, but for most regular employees, I think American taxes are easy. You take the form you are given by your employer, copy it over to another form, and pay or receive what you owe/are owed.

For the complicated cases, independent contractors and things like that, it is a bit more complicated. But I think it’s beneficial to the taxpayer to have control over it, rather than the government either making assumptions, or having complete access to the books to get the proper tax info.
