I feel like 75% of Mastodon are people talking about Linux. If you don’t care about Linux you feel alienated. I enjoy Mastodon and Lemmy, but the lack of more diverse subjects gets to me if I browse for too long.
Update: I took your advice and purchased a laptop for Linux, and now I care about it! Problem solved.
You found the solution yourself: Start to care about Linux :')

Word!
You’re the exact reason OP is feeling alienated.
If you don’t care about Linux (at least a little), you don’t care about property rights (including right to repair), digital freedom, privacy, and a whole host of other important social issues. So yeah, everybody – and especially everybody informed enough to understand the advantages of the Fediverse – really ought to care about Linux.
'Course, caring about it and wanting to talk about it are totally different things, and I can’t fault OP at all for not being interested in talking about it.
Damn, I finally found it. The one post thats convinced me linux isnt worth having to deal with its userbase.
Back to windows I go
Me: “hey maybe y’all should care about your rights”
Childish reactionaries in this thread:
You: “if you care about real issues, that means you have to use or want to use this niche and still pretty annoying to use operating system!”
Every single sane adult in earshot: “youre a fucking moron”
Linux is not the beacon of social justice youre pretending it is bud, and youre a walking example of the linux chud the internet at large mocks.
Someone call 112 (/911) There has been a massacre over here
Maybe there are rights more immediately important to people than the vague, long term rights associated with an open source operating system for their computer?
Maybe those people aren’t bitching about content on Lemmy, and my response isn’t for them.
Mate, you’re the one who said “everybody”. I’m glad to see I have convinced you to step off of that soapbox and see reality a bit more
Please enlighten me how Linux will save Palestinian children from being bombed
… Just to put your little world in context of the big world outside the window
Do they have windows in the basements trolls hang out in?
I don’t think so no. You’ve really gotta put some force into it to create one
“You’re literally not allowed to be concerned with more than one problem in the world at a time, and also fuck you if it isn’t the same one I picked no matter how off-topic it is.” – @[email protected], paraphrased
“everybody ought to care about Linux” - you, a few minutes ago. I’m taking your statement to the extreme to show how ridiculous it is
Maybe Palestinian children shouldn’t need to care about Linux. Maybe there are also lots of other people who shouldn’t need to care about Linux. My point was to make you see outside of your world
No, you’re just self-reporting how ridiculous your logical fallacy is.
Nobody but you is saying that folks can’t care about their rights and the Palestinian children at the same time.
Can you try to actually read properly what I wrote?! I’m not saying that you, a Linux maximalist, can’t care about both issues in the middle East and your open source operating system. I’m saying that there are plenty of people who have bigger issues (such as the being bombed) to have space to care about Linux
Your statements that everyone must care about Linux otherwise they don’t care about property rights etc is completely misguided
I already did the first time. Your argument is still a bullshit fallacy, especially since we’re talking about the context of somebody complaining about content on Lemmy, not Palestinian children. Hell, even if OP is a Palestinian child, if he had the mental space to post this then he clearly has some to spare, don’t you think?!
This is the kind of response that causes quips like that “Linux users are the vegans of tech” response above.
Try being less strident and off-putting and perhaps you might even get more Linux users.
